This post was done by Sammy Ashouri, the resident TUK domain parking nutcase fanatic. If you want tips and tricks on how to earn from domain parking, visit his blog. :)

I’m not sure how many of you have heard Ron Popeil’s famous quote, “Set it and Forget it,” but this is one quote that will NOT work with domain parking as much as it does with his famous rotisserie set.

Domain parking is a simple process. You buy a domain, set the nameservers to whatever the nameservers of the parking provider you are using are, and then sleep hoping to make money the rest of your life. Right? Wrong. You may have a name that’s generating money, but have you thought about optimizing it? Optimizing a parked domain is not that hard, and doing so you can increase the amount you are making by a couple folds.

For example, let’s say you own BondAccounts.com. People come to the site and you are making let’s say a good $5/day from the site. Taking a look at the site… the site might look like this:

Bond Accounts Before

What the hell keywords are: POS, Abba, Abf, Ein, Gto…? Some of these do mean something… like POS is Point of Sale, ABS is Anti-Lock Braking System, etc. But when you combine those together, they look like gibberish (the way it is in the picture). Now with domain parking you can set your keywords. A lot of people don’t do this… but they should. Let’s say I decide to “fix up” this parked domain. After a couple minutes, it might turn into something like this:

Bond Accounts After

Not bad, huh? Business template (Bond Accounts is a business term) and relevant advertisements. You now have bonds related ads–instead of Ein andGTO–which will hopefully get you a higher CTR and possibly a higher Cost Per Click (CPC).

As you can see, domain parking works, but there is a misconception that you cannot optimize. Simple fix ups like these can take you from $5 to $20 a day. That’s going from $1825/year to $7300 just by fixing the look of the domain. Granted you need to have a traffic domain, but if you do and aren’t optimizing, you are bleeding a lot of money. How do I know? I had a domain making $2/day and after seeing the keywords were WAY OFF it is now making around $10/day. That’s 5x the amount it was previously making for a 2 minute fix. And yes, it’s a steady average of $10/day. There are different ways to optimize however, but those techniques are a little more complex :) . I may eventually make a more detailed domain parking post on Fka200.com. For now, I have some tips you can look at here.

Alright everyone. Hopefully you guys are all rushing to your domains parking accounts and fixing things up! For parking providers, check out my domain parking list. Enjoy!

I will also be releasing my new eBook today, despite the exam tomorrow – I want to get it off to a small start. WooHoo, first comment again, I’m on a roll!! I guess I am just figuring out what time to get here!
I have tried domain parking in the past (even with high PR and previous high traffic domains) and have got the visitors but have never got the clicks. Thanks for the information, I think I may try it again now, however using “optimization” techniques to see if that helps me out!

I’m not a huge fan of domain parking. It seems like every time I go to register a domain name, I’m confronted with one of those ‘what you need, when you need it’ pages. So instead of a useful page, I get a page full of links to other pages that are full of links.
Didn’t know you could make that much per day with them though. That’s pretty impressive.

Domain parking isn’t for everyone. It really depends on the name.

And yes, a crapload of names are registered and parked… it creates the supply and demand market of domain names, which is why the internet is the way it is today. It’s annoying, but it needs to happen to create “value.”

There are some making millions/month off of domain parking. Those are super-generic terms, though.

@Sammy: This was about a year ago, unfortunately I have sold off most of my domains, but something I may play with again. I will hit you up if I come across anything good.

@Jason: A bit off-topic, but I just noticed TUK is now in the top 100,000 in the Alexa rankings. When did that happen? Congrats on busting into that level.

Sure thing, I remember a month ago it was only around 700,000 for so, but Alexa takes it time to get new stats.

    Sawan,

Those were pretty basic tips. There’s a lot more complicated tweaks you can pull with parked domains, but it’s a little more complicated ;) . It all depends on the name also. If you have a name with traffic thats not converting, you can manage to pull something off in terms of getting clicks.

Had one domain that was gettin 75 uniques/day yet wasn’t converting. Tweaked it a bit and made the layout extremely simple and now it’s making an average of .05-.10 cents/day. Doesn’t sound like much, but I’m sure I can sell this domain for $200 at any time. Good investment + making cash and there’s always room to optimize further.

Great post, and I agree with you, after fixing up the parked domain it actually looks more like a real site. I’m sure the first one wouldn’t generate nearly as many clicks, but the finished product looks like it most definitely would. I’ve never really done this before, actually, but this was very interesting and helpful nonetheless. Thanks. :)

I appreciate your comments though Sammy although 200 dollars for a domain that makes only 3 dollars a month?

    How so?

  16. Sammy Ashouri (126 comments) Says:

It’s all in the value. My rule of thumb is if it can make back reg fee, not a problem.

I said i know I can sell it for $200 at any given time… I bought it for $7.50.

I do have other domains making xx/day… Can’t get into to much detail. Jason knows bits and pieces ;)
