I haven’t been too much in touch with what’s happening with the blogosphere lately, as I’ve been busy with a ton of stuff – anyways, a comment left here yesterday by Simon of Otooo notified me that Entrecard was for sale, something I didn’t know.

Entrecard is something that has split people’s opinions quite a bit… on one side, you have people that cream over the system, and will not allow others to speak a single bad word about it… on the other hand, you have those that actively bash the system and hate everything about it. I tend to be somewhere in the middle – I think it is an alright network, with a killer idea behind it… I use it on newer blogs to get them a little traffic, however I have always advised people against getting too involved with the system as if you do so, you will find it a waste of time.

Discussing sales of bigger sites like this one is always an interesting thing though, so I’d like to see your opinions on this.

At the moment, opening bid is around $100,000 … to be honest, if I had that kind of money (sadly, I don’t… ) I’d probably have bid. The network houses upwards of 20,000 blogs right now, and even if you count off a few for being spam / auto generated, that’s still quite a lot. However, at the moment it is only making $2,000 per month – which is pathetic, to be honest (although granted, they state that they have not tried to monetize it).

I think that with a little bit of tweaking, Entrecard could easily make ten times that monthly revenue, or more.. with 80,000,000 impressions monthly and 3,000,000 clicks, it certainly has the ability.

The best way to monetize it would be to take a certain amount of the impressions, and run it as a CPM network I think… with a requirement that the Entrecard widget be near / above the fold. Even if they took just 30% of the impressions, and sold ad spots for $0.001 each, that’s $24,000 monthly – and these would be banners displayed on targeted (relative to niche, as Entrecard currently sorts it) websites. Of course, the $0.001 is just a bare minimum – websites could charge more based on the traffic they got monthly, and they could even offer some sort of revenue sharing program… with that amount of users, it would be harder NOT to make money. They could release a product, or promote someone else’s (at a conversion rate of 1% and a sale price of $50, that’s $10,000 per month)… I was astounded to hear that it was only making $2,000 per month with such huge amounts of traffic, and I’m sure the new owners will feel that it has plenty of potential for further development.

It’s been almost a year since it started, and growth has been phenomenal. This post won’t be of any real use to you, but I hope we can get some sort of debate flowing – what do you think of Entrecard as a service after 11 months, and if you had the capital… would you purchase it? Lastly, what do you think it will sell for (or if it will sell?) Closest guess to end sale price gets an ad slot in the sidebar for three months :)

Honestly I don’t think he will get a bid close to his reserve. Might get a couple hundred K for it, but no more. Honestly you could build up a much better service ground up if you got that kind of money. The Entrecard name is damaged in my opinion.

I agree whole heartidly Entrecard is a brand that has been defamed by bloggers everywhere and I wouldn’t want to be purchasing a damaged brand.

The concept behind Entrecard is great, and if it were marketed properly it could be a big money maker, but for the cost that it will be demanding I think you could develop a better system from the ground up.

My guess for price though is $272,000.

I totally agree with you, lots of the top bloggers used it and realized, it gives you crappy traffic. Most of the bloggers who use Entrecard spend less than 15 seconds on a blog, as they just want to collect EC Points. By the way I don’t get it why they didn’t monetize the site earlier…

I thought about that a when I saw the listing. But I don’t think so now. The news of Entrecard selling is everywhere, if it was false then the real owner would surely have made some announcement.

That site have no future. Entrecard has become another traffic exchange system.

It is not worth paying 50k or 100k or whatever his reserve is for this site. Really the site makes $2k per month. If you pay 100k you will be bidding 50 month of earnings…. which my friend is a lot of money…

Yes. There is so much traffic and in that traffic there is so much potential to earn money. The question is why didn’t the owner monetize the site earlier. If he had done that before, then Entrecard would have sold for a lot of money.

My guess is he won’t sell the site.

Honestly, if he was smart, he would’ve sold his site at it’s peak sometime before the summer. Now that it lost a lot of credibility, it’s reputation leans towards the negative.

Oh, plus, according to the listing, he won’t just sell the site to anyone with money… I think he’s just saying that cause he knows damn well the site isn’t going to meet the reserve :P

I’m somewhat suprised that you said you would bid. I was over reading datmoney.com and he laughed at the total. He said he literally laughed out loud, that it was rediculous. I’m curious, because you said in an earlier post that you are making next to nothing with this site, do you think you could really transfer all that traffic into money? I agree the potential is incredible, I am just curious how one would go about making money from it, besides throwing up some adsense ads.

Entrecard is a nice idea. That said, I think as far as getting your blog off the ground is concerned , you may have a fairly better deal with stumbleupon. Not that I root for either, but SU has a better feel to it. Never got round to taking EC seriously, and as far as a damaged brand is concerned … well, it isn’t that difficult to change that , especially if you hype the fact that its being managed by a new set of people ie sell the same name different idea/practice/concept. What do you guys think ?
