Guest Post – StumbleUpon Explained
Posted by Jason in Guest PostJason here, sitting in my grandparents’ house in Bombay. Their golden anniversary is today, and hopefully after that I will be able to update semi-sporadically. Thanks for the below guest post, and for all the others that were submitted – you will see them up over the next few days.
I trust that my readers understand that I am away and will not desert the blog.
Tomorrow, off to find t-shirt wholesalers!
Heya Blog readers. I am wragge11 from DP (being from DP isn’t something I am proud of, especially with all the n00b’s about!
). I have been web-mastering for about 6 years now, and am still not as successful as Jason – but eh, that’s life! I own a site called ToffeeBlue.com. As I promised Jason, I wouldn’t spam my Everton link about too much, but it is basically an Everton fan site (which of course there can never be too many of) that a professional made for me because I am too lazy to do it myself which I have made. And anyway, I don’t want to spread the link too much; I could do without the 4-1 comments from the Gooners!
End of horrifically obvious self promotion. Anyway, back to the important stuff. I wrote this article a while ago and it has been sitting on my computer for a long short amount of time, and thought that I may as well make some use of it. The article is about StumbleUpon, a free way to drive traffic to your site. It is a post for complete newbie’s who don’t even know what StumbleUpon is – this post tries to explain what it is, and how to use it.
Have you ever scourged the net looking for a great, FREE, way to generate massive amounts of traffic? Well if you have, your not alone. I personally, have done that search many times before. But alas, I have found one sure fire way to gain massive traffic, without shelling out so much as a penny. If so, StumbleUpon is the answer for you.
I have a website, and I was trying some different methods to bring traffic to the site, (without paying for it of course), and my search was hard and long and finally I almost gave into buying traffic. Jeez, I know. But it seemed to be the only way. And I thought, “I wish I could get TARGETED traffic, not just any old traffic. But that seemed hard or impossible, even with most paid traffic services. But then I stumbled upon (pardon the embarrassingly bad pun) a little website called StumbleUpon. Pretty nifty eh? Stumble upon is basically a website that you go to and you download this toolbar (Click the Download Now link on the right hand side) for Internet Explorer or Firefox. I Don’t believe it’s available for any other browsers, but I am sure the readers will correct me if I am wrong
. (sorry Opera and Safari users, you’ll need IE or Firefox (And I am not even spamming my referral link for FireFox – I must be in a good mood
) And what it does is show you a Stumble button, to find sites you might like in categories you pick, and I like it Button, to say you like the site your at, and a thumbs down button, for those retched websites you wish would be destroyed.
(Please destroy the MFA or made for Adsense sites – a pet hate of mine, even though I have some of my own
.
So what I did, was submit my site, and then write a great review for it. This a very important step. You should make sure you are the first to stumble and review your own site, and make sure you add the tags yourself. If not, you may end up with a dilemma like mine – my Everton site, is now tagged as American Football
!
Then I went to Digital Point Forums, signed up and headed to the freebies forum, which you can find here where I made a Stumble 1:1 exchange. I would make sure you do this very quickly as the ruthless killing machines that are DP Moderators are banning everything, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see this being the next thing them ban. Or, you could head over to Jason’s Forum which you can find here. There’s your plug Jason, I expect the $1,000 in my PayPal tomorrow
.
What this did was get my site stumbled and reviewed, and then by me stumbling other sites, my account gets stronger. Sounds like a win, win situation eh? Well, believe me, it is. Within one day, if you searched StumbleUpon for American Football
, I came up second, and the next day, first
. Hey, I may be upset, but it made me a good few dollars in Adsense. How’s that for amazing. Within the next two days, my traffic skyrocketed, and by submitting each article I write to StumbleUpon, I am getting more and more targeted traffic. No less than 500+ NEW USERS every day and more than 10 times the traffic I was getting before, and steadily rising.
So all in all, StumbleUpon is GREAT for marketing, I mean great. And best of all, it’s free. Also, if you really wanted, you can even buy quality stumbled with reviews for fairly cheap. Much cheaper than buying straight traffic. One, it’s targeted, so they’ll come back again, and two, they’ll be more inclined to click ads because they’ll like the subject of your site, otherwise they wouldn’t have Stumbled Upon it.
And yes, it IS Adsense safe of course, because you would consider it Social Bookmarking. So my suggestion is this. Sign up, Download the toolbar, Submit your site, and start generating REAL and FREE targeted traffic, today.
Now, please don’t be too ruthless with your comments, and if you like the article, please don’t forget to stumble it. And, oh yeah, visit my site!
Time for a game of FIFA 08!

I’ve had good luck with stumbleupon and DP, but definitely not 500 new users a day. Nicest thing about it though is with DP you can post another freebie once every week or month (whenever your site gets out of the rankings for your keywords) and get it pushed back up to the top again. Four or five people reviewing with your tags is all you really need.

Pick traffic I got from SU were 8000 unique visitors for 24 hours, although 300 – 600 daily is what I regularly get from SU.
Stumbleupon is amazing, especially if you have a bot *cough*
Well, thanks for the floods of “great post” — aye, I am sure they will come soon enough; I just hope a few readers found this useful!
@ Matt – I hope there is no cheating going on — please respect Stumble (I love bots too!)
You can get lots of free traffic from the Freebies section on DP but it is very boring opening threads and stumbling other people’s sites.I prefer paying for stumbles.
By the way did anybody see that Jason has been banned from DP ?

Very strange
Isn’t stumbleupon traffic come and go. I don’t think even the best adsense optimized gets any clicks.

Hi Dan
I hope you are enjoying your time in India Jason and you have success in purchasing your T Shirts
I too have been banned by DP. Quite a shock to me, even though I managed to work out why it happened, the events surrounding it had me totally oblivious to my causing any infractions and there is no recourse, they just ban you, end of story. I do miss visiting there, though, but it has me being more mindful of the rules of a site and as I said being a newbie I am still learning
I have joined WF and I am also a member of SP but they are quite different to DP, so I won’t be back until April, at DP. Ignorance is bliss, but no excuse! I did the crime so I am doing the time, LOL
I still feel though that the crime didn’t fit the punishment
Great post!. I am a newbieto IM. I signed up for SU several weeks ago but I have to admit, I haven’t been able to get my head around it yet, so I haven’t done anything more with it. I think I am more inclined towards ‘trevomanut’s’ approach and would much rather pay for it. If anyone out there wants to put in an offer to stumble some websites for me then I would be willing to look at their offers. I could definitely do with receiving more traffic just like everyone else

great post! really helpful.. i too use the SU exchange in DP.
helps a lot in promoting my proxies
Sorry for the late reply, just got off a plane from Dubai!
@ trevomanut – It may be boring, but IMO it is worth it for the reward you get from it!
@ Usman – You may say that, as the users are techinally savvy, but you could still get a few clicks; still worth doing IMO.
@ Arun – Thanks for the link, I use Safari sometimes and that will help!
@ Jason – Life sucks doesn’t it!
@ Akon – SU is a great way to advertise proxies, probably the best way of free advertising!
Thanks to everyone for their kind comments!
Good post there
I love stumbleupon

Hi Dan,
thanks for the great info. Like Misty, I downloaded the Stumbleupon toolbar and didn’t really know what to do with it.
I really need to use your post to get it going again.
Thanks to everone for your kind words, and I look forward to writing again when Jason decides to scive off!
Nice post Dan. I have used StumbleUpon before, and plan to use it again. There is a huge number of viewers from StumbleUpon, and it is a great way to attract people.
I am loving SU this week. Over the past week my blog had approximately 50,000 uniques from a post of my sisters. I didn’t expect this at all because…
a) the story behind the post isn’t factual. Granted, my sister didn’t know this at the time.
b) The story has been around the net for some time. I remember seeing it on Reddit ages ago.
You never know what will take off through SU! We’ve also had lots of ‘bonus’ traffic from people linking to the story from all over the place.

Stumbleupon seems to work great for a short burst of traffic, and nothing sustained. You must continually do it in order to keep the traffic coming, at least IMO.
