A few of you may have noticed that this website was down yesterday – this blog’s gotten a bit too big for shared hosting and I’ll need to move it onto a VPS/dedicated server. I already had a dedicated server but recently canceled it as I had tons of unused space and it was slow as hell; anyways, I’ll be looking to upgrade.

The blog currently uses HostICan shared hosting, which I’d recommend to anyone starting up in the industry – their package for a newbie is pretty sweet considering they allow unlimited addon domains and unmetered bandwidth… if your website gets too big though, you’ll need to move, as I’m doing now. I’m going to make an in depth post about HostICan later this week, but for now if you want to signup for the Tera Host package you can use the coupon code University-12 to get $40/off; if you sign through my affiliate link and coupon code, I’ll also give you an hour of my time setting up your blog.

I’m thinking of upgrading to their VPS-Rage package which costs $45.00/month; the features of it are shown below.

I’ve just been notified by my buddy Carlin that the reason for this blog going down is due to it being pwned by Digg – the funny thing is that the article which got submitted was one about using proper hosting… and as soon as it got dugg, my hosting crashed. A tad embarassing, but if you guys are going to submit to Digg and then follow up, please let me know first and don’t do so at the moment, as Digg kills shared hosting, as a few of you will have unfortunately found out

You can check out the submitted stories here:

1) Warning – The Web Hosting Business Is Not For Kids (I’m a kid, so I do have an excuse for the server crash  )

2) What does the room of a Teenage IM look like?

Total of more than 500 Diggs – I’d be interested in knowing who Bulger is. :) . Read the comments if you want a laugh, having not known about being Dugg or the multiple crashes, I thought they were pretty funny. ;)

Anyways, I’m considering moving to Hostican as they will move everything for me and I love their support, but if anyone has other ideas, just let me know. I don’t want to go with GoDaddy or Hostgator as they have too much of a bad reputation – I’m looking for hosting with people that will help you move over and are established – price is also important of course :)

Get the popcorn out

Those of you that like a little blogging controversy might want to check out the post at John Cow about Graham Langdon and Entrecard comment bashing… it’s an interesting read :)

Got to run, insane amounts of work these days with a couple essays and two mid terms coming up next week. I’ll be needing guest posters soon enough – if you’re interested, add me on MSN/Yahoo. :)

I’m also thinking of releasing a custom created eBook and a sales page for it, similar to the quality of the one over here – and charge say, $50/package. How many of you would be interested in purchasing that? :)

Congrats jason. Getting a dedicated server is the first step to moving
    towards the big league :-)

You would have gotten more diggs if you have done this:

“This has gotten 58 diggs? And the room isn’t disgusting, odd colored, or have weird stuff in it?”

    LMAO funny though.

This honestly makes no sense to me, and shouldn’t make much sense to most of you. A blog… on a dedicated server? A blogsite should NEVER demand much resources. I don’t know what you could be storing on your server in order to “run out of space” but it would need to be like movies or something because text files and images (blogs) isn’t going to cut more than 500MB in the most extreme case. Please let me know your secrets :D

I host my blog from a reseller package that I own. I have never had a problem with my host and would highly recommend using them if you haven’t yet purchased your new package. I won’t post a link cause I don’t want to spam up the thread, but if you want to know about it you can email me.

How many diggs did you get by chance, I mean I haven’t been lucky enoughto have this happen to me as the 2 stories I have had submitted on digg have barely made it to 20 diggs. What kind of traffic are we talking about?

@ Jim, its the bandwidth, and use of resources that’s the issue, not the space. I only use 2 GB of space at the moment for my current hosting, and although it says bandwidth is ‘unmetered’ they will kill your website if you use too much.

@ Adam, will do so. Posting links (even affiliate ones) is fine as long as you add something to the discussion, which you have done :)

As for the Diggs, 500 on the first one, 100 ish on the second. Around 5k visitors straight up, I think.

Hostgator’s shared hosting servers are great. I managed to be with them on shared even when I used to get 20,000 page views a day and 3-5k uniques a day. But ultimately was asked to upgrade lol. I took a VPS then. Dont take VPS just for digg traffic, go for a better shared hosting, as digg traffic doesnt come everyday.

If your hosting company can’t afford this digg effect, probably change the host and I believe a blog website won’t need dedicated hosting considering no memory intensive tasks on a blog except some spike in traffic once in a while. Talk to HostICan guys to find out providing better service.

You probably don’t need to go dedicated just for this blog, dedicated servers take some seriously heavy loads and your blog isn’t going to use even a quarter of that so it might be a waste of money…just go for a bigger shared hosting plan and save quite a bit…

Explain this to me. You are suggesting that we start off on a hosting company that is great for beginners and then suggest when we become successful we change hosts? You do know the dangers of changing hosts, as well as the complexity. Wouldn’t is just make sense to start on a host with decent all around rates and upgrade as needed?

  28. George (72 comments) Says:

my suggestion – A VPS with 384 guarenteed memory won’t stand up to a good digg-ing, to be totally honest.
Your shared host is probably running at least 2gigs of RAM, and you still killed it, with however many other non-dugg sites on there.
When you move up, you want to go for something with at least 512 dedicated memory, and you definitely want to check the contention ratio (how many VPSs you are sharing a 100mbit connection with), because this effects your speed massively :P
And you know what they say, good content = diggs ;)
