How To Make Money From Your List
Posted by Ryan McLean in Guest PostI talked recently about the value of having a list. John Chow also recently did a post on how he made $4,000 in one day just through his subscriber list. So this is proof that a list is extremely valuable.
I want to talk about how to make money from your list. Personally I am building my list to a solid number and I know that Jason is doing the same. I recently tripled my subscribers from 250 to 950 in just 30 days. Which is a good effort by anyone’s standards.
So, if you get to the point of having a decent sized list (over 1,000) then how can you make money from it?
1. Make Money From Your Blog
When using Aweber, you can combine your RSS subscription with your Aweber email subscription. The more RSS subscribers you have the more you can ask for advertising on your website. I have personally used this technique to get advertisers for my website.
This is a great way to make some money indirectly from your newsletter.
2. Promote Your Own Products
This is the number 1 way to make money from your newsletter subscribers. You need to first build trust with them and then when you create a product you can send some emails out to your list telling them about your product.
I recommend offering your subscribers special deals that are not available to anyone else. This way you will increase your conversion rates and continue to build trust with your subscribers.
3. Do Joint Ventures
As your list grows, joint ventures are the perfect way to make money. You can swap ’solo emails’ with other entrepreneurs who have lists (but I would avoid this).
You can also market someone else’s product to your list. This is how John Chow made $4,000 in one day. He simply sent an email to his list about another product and he made $4,000 in comissions.
You can also market your product through other people’s lists, offer the owner of the list a “commission” for every sale. This is great because you can make money, and you can continue to build your list through this method.
4. Paid Advertising
It is possible to get people to pay you money to send out a ’solo email’ to your list. Or you can also allow people to place advertising in your weekly newsletters.
Personally I would steer away from all advertising. The value of your list comes when they truely trust you and advertising a bad product can reduce or completely remove that trust. But, if you do want to make money from advertising then by all means give it a go.
I recommend placing advertising in your email newsletters that get sent out each week. You can place a small advertisement, which is less intrusive to a solo email and you can still build trust with your newsletter.
As you can see it is not that difficult to make money from a list. I recommend you start build one asap through your blog or through forum marketing and you will then discover the true power of your list.

I would hate people who share my data and just unsubscribe from their list, overall I must say I have unsubscribe from a lot of list cause they turned into fulltime sales pitches. The most important factor is to find a balance between being useful and being an irritating guy who just wants you to increase his income.

Ya even i had to unsubscribe form some newsletters as they were getting very irritating. They should understand that they should keep a balance

That’s true! The main reason to subscribe to a site is to get useful info and not for advertising! You have to find the right balance. 20 posts to 1 commercial mail would be ok I think…

These are great tips. And I agree – balance is what matters here the most
I just got aweber and have begun building my list over the last week.
Whats your best tips for building the actual list? Contests are not usually the best way…

A *useful* freebie always works well. Just be sure to place the subscribe box above the fold and possibly below posts…semi unobtrusively, but noticeable.

I had to chuckle a bit. It’s quite possible to take money for advertising and not promote garbage…..you don’t have to accept everyone.

I agree with you having a decent sized list is very powerful. It allows you to contact those people at any time to promote products you have to offer or to get them to come back and visit your site. I would advise people to offer useful info at the beginning as otherwise you will find people will unsubscribe fast if you just bombard them with advertising all the time.

Interesting post, I think a lot of people forget about the email lists and don’t make the most out of them. It’s true that too much advertising will lead to unsubscriptions and a bad rep though.

great idea to start building a list, however I do agree that too much advertising can really turn one off which in turn leads to unsubscribing. Just beware of this factor when making your list and your newsletter, is my only counsel.
I like the idea that you can up your increase your RSS subscribers by using aweber. It is great idea.

Although I love doing paid surveys, List building has got to be some of the best money making ideas known to man. With a nice list, you can just push a button (almost) and money comes out. It’s a cash machine!

Don’t just run one list, run several. I have over 70 of them myself. Some are for different niches, some are a 30/60 day eclass, some target customer care, etc.etc.etc.
If you can think of 365 tips, you can run a Tip A Day list for your particular niche. You’re only limited by your imagination.
