I’m considering getting a custom theme design created for this blog… as soon as one of the Wordpress designers I know gets online, I will have a talk with them.
Although I do like the theme, when I visit this blog it doesn’t really jump out at me… I don’t get that ‘wow factor’. And if I don’t get it, it’s likely that brand new visitors to the blog – that is, people that have not heard of it before and just found it by clicking through from another site… will have a thirty second look at the front page, and disappear if they don’t like what they see.
What I’m thinking of is a magazine type theme… maybe not as much as condensed as the likes of the Revolution theme, but something like a featured post (that is, the latest post), then two posts that were before that as excerpts… with the rest of the page staying constant – some of the best posts on this blog.
Personally, I think that the John Cow theme – that is, Milk It – is dead in this niche. Just too many people are using it, and although they all have custom headers, slightly tweaked colour styles etc… they all look the same. Cow himself (that is, the new owner) recently made edits to his theme which I thought were pretty smart as they got rid of areas that didn’t make money and made those that did more prominent. Two other popular blogs, John Chow and Winning The Web both recently reverted to a more magazine type style… both look a lot more professional, I think.
At the moment, this blog is carnage to navigate… there are 350 posts, and a lot of them are complete and utter nonsense – however, those that aren’t will help you boost your brand, add thousands to your monthly income and a whole lot of other benefits. Right now though, those posts are difficult to find… so new visitors to the website visit, see the latest posts (which may be rubbish, or things like site news so not helpful) and think that there’s nothing of note.
I want to change that.
Here’s where you guys come in!
I have an idea of posts that I think will help you guys a lot… some little, some quite a bit. However, as this is aimed at ‘the people’, I want the people to let me know posts that they like best.
The best out of the ones you’ve chosen (may have a vote or just select them myself) will be featured on the homepage. I’m thinking around 10 posts, maybe a few more if deemed necessary.
To be utterly honest, I’ve been mad busy over the last few months, as I keep stating on here… I don’t remember what I blogged about a week ago, let alone a few months. Hopefully you guys do, though!
Anyways, if you’ve got a few spare minutes, check your bookmarks / posts you’ve subscribed to and let me know which ones you think have helped you the best. A couple, like my proxies post and the one about starting a new blog will definitely be on the front page… but the others are all up to you guys.
Just leave a comment linking to a post you liked. Cheers!

Waiting to see the new design. I’m thinking of changing my theme too. You’re right, the milk-it theme is dead in this niche. I’m gonna change it soon.

I think TUK is meant to use MilkIt. It is not dead and it looks very nice on this blog.
Anyway, my favorite would be the password protected post

frankly,
I’ve never liked this theme
to me it always looked cluttered and not thought out
I think it would be great if you had a re-design! It’s always a good way to boost exposure.

Hey Jason,
I’d also look into posts that have the most comments. (or use a plugin like popularity contest)
Thanks for the mention! I’ve found that the magazine style homepage generates a lot more pageviews to old posts and introduces new visitors to what your blog is all about. As for featuring posts on your front page, your analytics don’t lie..

Personally, I really liked your post on, using a-flagship-blog-to-provide-a-boost-to-your-projects. It’s a very true post, and most often people try and bust there way through with a bunch of minor projects. But if you have one consistent blog that you keep working on, it can be a fall back. And also you can use it for sending links to your other blogs.
