2008
Luckily, I had the day off today… and will have all Wednesdays off for the rest of the semester, as I don’t have any classes on this day. Just relaxed a little bit, worked on setting up the new computer (will put up a picture soon if I can find my camera…) and had the time to write this post for you guys.
Many people ask what they should do when they want to start getting into website flipping… although there are plenty of people that recommend it, few say get started and do X to make money. Of course, newbies generally have a tonne of questions – what kind of sites do they flip, where do they host them, how do they transfer domains, where to sell, how to build up a positive reputation, how to decrease the risks… you get the idea.
Anyways, this is how I started out, and I’d recommend you do this too… flip BASIC websites. Websites that you can put together in less than five minutes.
Don’t worry about promoting, customizing, developing your websites… just buy domains, setup a fresh install of your website and try to sell it. Of course, blogs don’t work for this (no one is going to buy a base blog with no traffic / revenue / content) but people will definitely be willing to buy other types of turnkey websites.
You will make very little amounts on these (maybe ten dollars or less profit) however I recommend it when you start out. Why?
Build reputation. The problem in public forums is that people don’t tend to trust new users. By building up a reputation (be it reputation or iTrader ratings) you make sure people will be more likely to deal with you.
Gain experience. When I started out selling websites, I didn’t even know what the term ‘hosting’ related to… yes, I asked friends questions, but the best way to learn is by experience. By selling simple turnkey sites, you’ll learn the basics – transferring, how to best conduct a sale and things like that.
Low risk. You start out with (for example) trying to flip a niche content website with ten articles that took you five hours to write or $50 to outsource… if you get scammed (which is definitely possible when starting out, as you are inexperienced / naive), you lose a lot of time / money (for a newbie, $50 is a lot of money!). When flipping $5 – $10 sites, you get scammed, fine – you won’t be happy about it, but all you lose is five minutes or so which is worth it for the experience (and having that experience, it’s less likely you’ll be scammed in the future).
Potential further sales. Sell a simple site, but the buyer doesn’t have hosting for it? Point him / her to a great host that you know, for example Hostgator… and collect $100 in affiliate commission. Should the buyer like your website that you sold to him at $15, ask him if he’d like 5 more at a discounted rate of $12 apiece… finding buyers can be difficult, and if you can get repeat buyers that is the easiest way to make money out there.
Of course, experience is the biggest benefit out of all the above.
What type of turnkey sites can you flip?
PLR EBook Sites. I had a period a few months ago when I was making around $1,000 per week flipping standard PLR Ebook sites… all I did was upload the files to a related domain and it used to sell for $50 – $150. They sell for less now, but considering you have to do less than a minute and a half of work after buying the domain, well… it’s worth trying to sell them. If it looks good, it’ll sell.
Proxies. Choose a decent domain (nothing wrong with .INFOs for proxies), put up a slick looking free design and list it. At worst, it doesn’t sell and you promote it yourself, at best it sells and you make a profit (even if you make only a $1.2 profit, you can reinvest it in a .INFO domain!
).
Image hosts. Likewise, upload the script, and list it. On these fresh websites, you really have to convince the buyer… you could talk about how popular image hosting websites are, mention some recent big sales and find some blog posts talking about how to promote them and link the buyer to them after a purchase.
Simple script sites. You can make a decent amount of money flipping simple script websites… a person that I helped get started out site flipping, who is also a contestant of the site flip contest was able to flip 2-3 of them (flip word sites) at $30 each less than a day after putting them up on a new domain. Considering that the script costs $5 or so for multi use and .INFO domains cost $1.19, it’s not that big of a loss to try it out. You could try flip word sites, PR checker sites, WHOIS checker sites, joke sites, quote sites… you get the idea.
Try, try, try and soon you’ll feel confident enough in your abilities to move onto bigger and better things. Without those early, low level attempts though, I probably would never have been motivated to move into site flipping, or even start this blog… so make sure that if you haven’t entered the site flipping game, this is how you should start out.

Nice tips bud…
Shannon Lilly’s last blog post..Interactive Media Is The Best Thing On The Net! Lets see how the movies are doing it and learn from them! – Success Guide!
Could you give writer of this blog a reason to believe that these are nice tips. I’m not trying to be crude here but no one will even care to go to your blog if all you say is “nice tips bud”. If you want traffic from commenting then you need to make sure that you don’t ruin your impression of the people that read your comments. I used to be just like you and people would never be impressed. They do not want to come to your blog and they do not want to become one of your readers. Try to give the writer something to work with or tell them the reasons why you think it is a good article or a bad article. Make sure to always write more than three sentences and you’ll get tons of blog traffic.

LOL, Franklin Bishop, I know what you mean, but sometimes all you can think of to say is nice tips, for the simple reason that the article is very comprehensive (as this one admittedly is) and there isn’t a thing that you think needs to be added. JMO, but you do make a good point.
PLR EBook Sites
I suggest everyone to try this. I made my first few hudred dollars online with this one. Selling plr ebook/software -sites.
It’s perfect to start your website flipping career with these.

Some nice tips you’ve got here. I haven’t really done the whole site-flipping thing, so this should be good for me.

I do not think flipping web sites is as hard as some people make it out to be. I mean you already have a basic idea once you receive the web site so all you have to do turn into something even better. Some people think that it is a hard task but it really isn’t. Usually when someone sells you a web site, they have failed to create a popular web site. So usually you can go back and see what didn’t work for that person and just change the things that didn’t work. There is tons of information all over the Internet that can help you get the traffic you need. You just have to be driven to make something successful and you will.

Flipping websites has been a hard slog for me. I thought it would be easy and simple…but it’s not. You can’t just create a 5 page blog and then sell it on. You need to be more creative. I get frustrated when thinking about website flipping
Ryan McLean’s last blog post..What To Do With a Failed Blog Flip???
Same here. I usually sell sites when they just don’t work, so site flipping has been quite a new thing to me and it still isn’t the most friendly thing.
Oh and what does “Turnkey” mean?
Ryan McLean’s last blog post..What To Do With a Failed Blog Flip???
Turnkey is basically a site that is ready to go with the turn of a key or in other words, sites that are just put up with the default design/settings and are not modified/modified to a minimal extent.
Girish’s last blog post..Obese Cats
Turnkey – out of the box, a ready to go site basically. Usually brand new
I was wondering whether those sites which offer hosting coupons are turnkey sites or not. Do they run on a script?

Thanks for the tips Jason. I haven’t flipped a site yet, but plan to do so in the next 2-3 months.
With you having Wednesdays off maybe that will be the day to look out for the best posts?!
I have often thought about trying site flipping but I am put off by the amount of time that I will have to spend to make x amount of dollars. 5 hours of work for a $50 return just isn’t worth it for me. Also, when I put my time and effort into creating a site I am always reserved about letting it go, as I am always sentimental and find myself wanting to keep the site myself, to see how I can grow it. Unfortunately I am usually lazy and eventually wish that I would have flipped the site!
Regardless, I think this post makes some good points that I myself should follow. Spending a few minutes to make a few bucks may give us (me) the confidence to dive more deeply into the site flipping game.
Hey mate,
Just wanted to check up on the posting at TUK. I have a pretty decent idea and I am going to try it out and give you the results over msn. Anyway, nice post you made, should help some people out. You could possibly go into each section with more depth in the future posts.
These flipping posts are one of the most interesting subjects.

I’m sorry Jason, but this post seemed to me like it’s only for people who are already flipping sites and know what all these terms mean. If you explained a little more it would be much more useful for beginners. For example, what are turnkey sites, PLR EBook Sites, Proxies, and script sites?
You also mentioned that you can earn extra money by referring the buyer to a host – but if they bought your site from a place like Sitepoint, wouldn’t they probably already know what they’re doing, and have everything they need? Where do you recommend listing the web sites? Craigslist, eBay, somewhere else?
Silla’s last blog post..Stunning vector images at Designious
Hehe I am sorry… some of these terms are very common to me that I use them without thinking, even though I had no clue what they were starting out!
Anyways, a short explanation for each:
Turnkey – out of the box, a ready to go site package basically. Usually brand new.
PLR – PLR stands for private label rates. What these are are non-unique products sold by internet marketers (can be products relating to any niche) that allow you to put your name on them, sell them at any price you want, give them away for free etc.
For example, a website offering PLR products (no affiliation) is TurboPLR.com
Check out http://turboplr.com/archive/200808/? for an example.
Now in this case, I’d get a fully professional, ready to go product (that I can sell to an IM list, on forums, wherever I want) for $67. Which is nothing compared to the money I *could* earn selling it. PLR helps marketers save time by providing them with products they can sell and keep 100% of the profits… I could get up one of theses within 5 minutes.
Now, most PLR stuff comes with a sales page… so what I used to do, is upload the sales page, change the name on it to my own, buy a related domain (so if it was an eBook talking about making money with affiliate marketing, I’d buy something like AffiliateCash or AffiliateMoney etc) and put it up for sale. You’d be surprised, but those sites that took five minutes to get together used to sell for anywhere between $50 – $150, even on webmaster forums. Which of course was sensational money for the time invested in it.
Proxies – most work places and schools will block common ‘fun’ sites – game sites for example, Facebook, Myspace etc. Proxies provide a way for people to get around this blocking, by encrypting the URLs and allowing access… due to this they’re popular.
You can read more about them at a post I wrote ages ago:
Guide To Proxies
Script sites… now this is difficult to explain, as I’m a code newbie… but a script is basically code written for a specific type of website. A proxy runs on a specific script (it’s called PHProxy), and you can get scripts which you can use for the types of websites mentioned above.
See http://www.websitescripts.org/_catalog/website_scripts/_page_rank_script
For an example, which when uploaded would become:
http://checkyourpagerank.net/
Again, you can buy these types of scripts, stick them on a related domain and put them up for sale.
As for the hosting thing… it depends where you’re listing. Even on Sitepoint, you get people that don’t have hosting already… and on less web-knowledgeable places like eBay and Craigslist, you’ll find a lot of people like this.
I tend to sell mine on Sitepoint and privately to a list of buyers I have on instant messenger, although I’d also recommend Digital Point and eBay.
Hope that explained things a little better – let me know if you need anything else clarified
Thanks for the long explanation Jason, it helped a lot!
Silla’s last blog post..Stunning vector images at Designious
No problem. One clarification – PLR = private label rights, had a long day at Uni.
Interesting. What kinds of turnkeys you started to flip? Proxies and arcades?
Koi Games’s last blog post..Ratmaze 2
When I started, I tried out all of them, apart from scripts that were too difficult to install.
Nowadays, I’m moving back into proxies, although arcades might be an interesting one…
Hey Its interesting.I think site flipping wil fetch a more money than other methods.I’ll try my best in this site flip contest.

Hey Jason, excellent tips there. Just a question(s), what is the best place to buy scripts? Is it OK to use free ones?
Depends on what type of website you want to setup. Some, like image hosts… proxies… etc, the base version is free, others (like arcades – Arcadem Pro is an amazing script but it costs money).
For paid ones, the above link (websitescripts.org) and Hotscripts is good too

Good luck
Excellent tips Jason! I have same question hat is the best place to buy scripts??

Hey Jason,
It’s actually good that we go from smaller things to bigger ones. If we start looking at the bigger aspects all at once, we *might* fail, and there are heavy chances of it.
Great post once again
For some turnkey sites to use, you could check out BANS (Build A Niche Site) webiste.
I could be wrong (gosh, it’s happened before!) but I don’t think BANS is transferable. The new owner would also have to buy a copy of BANS.
Secondly, they’d have to get accepted to EPN (the eBay affiliate program) independently of you.
Don’t get me wrong … I use BANS, and I like it (or did, till Google went on a BANS deindexing spree a couple of weeks ago) but it’s not as easy to transfer as a PLR site or a script site.

Selling PLR ebooks might get right with some luck.
Aleks’s last blog post..Funny picture – Police at work
nice info, my big question is how to transfer all thing from our site to other hosting if costumer already have one? it seem complicated for me
I recently bought a domain name that would make a nice niche video site. You know, something like cutemonkeymoviesDOTcom and there are loads of video clips about monkeys, from YouTube, Google Video, etc. (It’s not that domain, BTW!)
I think I could flip this pretty effectively.
Can anyone recommend a script that will automatically pull videos from the YouTube API and continue to update the site? From a little Googling, there seem to be loads of such scripts, of various prices, and various vintages … I’d have no idea of how to select one.
Any recommendations?

So with this TurboPLR.com site, the $67 is paid one time and then you get their package that you can use as a turnkey sales for ebooks? I’m a little lost.
Also, would a proxy site do better than an PLR site?
Newbie questions, just asking to see how far I can get before someone calls me that, and crits me on my “lack of knowledge”. LOL>
Hey Nat…
@ TurboPLR, it’s a little more advanced… you get an opt in page, list messages and other stuff to be honest you don’t need starting out. I was using it as an example as I had visited it earlier in the day.
You can generally find PLR eBooks w/ accompanying sales pages pretty cheap… look for a membership on somewhere like Digital Point. Around $10 – $15 for a whole collection of them.
As for what would do better… it varies from person to person. Try both and see what works for you!
I’m running inspired by your success and am working on my book draft. Only I dodn’t know how well it is going to do.

I agree with Franklin Bishop, you have to be driven, Thats the only way. Keep at it with a tenacity and before you know it… ; Like everything else those who stay on make it because a larger number give up. I’m off to try my own ebook, finished writingit, I’ll put it together and set up a site for it
