People aim to make money online for many different reasons – I started out because I was bored and had little else to do; others do it because they need a way to generate some income to pay for expenses like rent; others just for fun.
For me today, I do this whole internet marketing thing just for fun – I started out with the wrong mindset and made pennies, working hours for a few bucks… I relax a lot more now, work a lot less, make far more money than I used to.
If you work too hard, you’re going to be less productive than if you work smart.
You see, everyone has that ability to make money. You, me, X and Y – you can all do it. But few do.
It’s not just starting out – everyone can make more money, but few do.
If I wanted to make $1,000 today, I could. So could you.
If it was really wanted, and both of us were prepared to work for it…that number would be an easy figure to reach. I don’t reach it because I’m a lazy schmuck, and those of you that don’t reach it probably don’t because you’re lazy, or even if you’re not – because you’re working hard, not smart.
Here’s how you make $1,000 today, if you’re willing to put in the work – flip simple content websites.
1. Buy ten .COM domains
2. Find ten simple templates from somewhere like OSWD (or you could download some Adsense ready Wordpress themes if you prefer using them)
3. Pick ten niches. 5-10 articles per niche, 250 words each. Optimize them for Adsense (one block, above the fold or in the post).
4. Make your website look good. Obviously I can’t give you exact steps to follow as each website is different, but remember that in the quick flip, 85% of doing so if how your website looks. If you want to add some glamour, throw together a quick logo in two minutes by combining a picture from SXC.hu and Logo Pixy.
5. List your website(s) at the various webmaster forums. Create a shit hot listing talking about the benefits (this deserves its own post, so I’ll put up one soon).
You need each website to sell for an average of $100 to make your $1,000 a day. Even if they sell for half that (which is more than likely… look at content site flippers on webmaster forums and you’ll see unique content sells) you’re making $500 a day. Once you get used to it, you can knock out a website in less than an hour (takes me thirty minutes). Ten hours daily x $100 = your $500 – $1,000. And sometimes you’ll find websites sell for more than $100.
I’m as honest as I can be with you guys – no, I do not do this (I do flip websites, and have flipped more than a hundred or so, but not so many daily) – for no other reason than I’m lazy.
I’d rather do something interesting for $250 than something boring for $500. And although this will make you money, it’s definitely boring. Unless you outsource.
You see, for me – if I walk away now, I lose nothing. So I treat this as a hobby as well as a business – rather than solely the latter.
The purpose of this post was to remind people that taking breaks – even if it’s just 15 minute ones – will leave you accomplishing far more than if you work straight through the day. So relax if you want to make money!

A great way to make easy money, if you know what your doing. Doesn’t that get very tiring after a while as you said? I can see that get boring. I expand how I make money, I like to offer unique services that I enjoy doing. Though soon I will probably try this method, just on one. I don’t want to waste my money.

While it does work well, the method seems a lot like fishing for pocket change, and I think the time would be much better spent, say learning new methods that run on autopilot.
The whole point of making money online is to get the most bang for the hour, and flipping websites, although profitable, doesn’t deliver.

Jason, love your posts and I subscribe to your RSS. Huge fan… My question for you is if you had a part time virtual assistant, how would you best take advantage of their time? I’m starting a VA on Monday and am going to have her start listing my sites to directories first, but I can buy that for cheaper than she will be. What would you recommend?
Thanks. Brian

@ Nathaniel & Tim – yes, this is a basic method, and no one can make a full time income flipping simple content sites (although I personally know people making around $3,000 monthly – one website per day).
This is however a great way to get up starting capital for newbies – one month of doing this, they make even just a couple thousand dollars, they can invest and treble their profits or even more.
Re the bang for the hour – flipping websites like these don’t, but flipping websites long term is definitely a profitable, easy business model that plenty follow. A few months ago, I sold a website for $1,500 which took twenty minutes to setup – how’s that for a bang?
@ Brian, glad you like the blog.
I’ve used VAs in the past and would get them to do menial jobs – either boring or just not cost effective.
Some things you could do:
- Answering emails
- Submissions (not just directories, but also RSS websites and social bookmarking)
- Freelancing (content writing etc)
The thing about VAs is that if you train them, you can have each one generating profit for you. For example, you could teach one of them to setup simple websites like the ones above – they charge $10/hour and take an hour per site, you’re looking at an alright profit for zilch work on your part

It’s a good strategy for making money, particularly because a lot of people simply don’t know how to do this. I know I don’t. I guess once you get past that initial obstacle of “how do I do this,” the second and third time (and thereafter) are pieces of cake. Now I know where all those niche sites for sale on Digital Point came from.

This is a great article. I was planning on doing this to one site this summer, except, I’d make the wordpress theme myself, to give it a little extra kick. Thing is now, the domain name (that is available) that I wanted has a dash in it (without a dash was taken). It is a .com name, so its formatted:
word-word.com
You think I should use this domain or search for another one? The reason I want to keep word-word is because the whole site / design is based around those words, I thought it was clever…

Yes Jason, this is a good way to start up with some money, or actually the second step. Remember you have to have the money to buy all those sites first, or to buy the domains and hosting. Not too hard, but I would still say there has to be a bit of work put up before it. Also you have to know what your doing, if you have no experience in a niche you should not enter, so for newbies blogging about blogging is a terrible idea.

One more question, what webmaster forums are your ‘regulars’ ? The ones that you automatically go to to sell flipped sites? I’m stuck with D-P, TalkFreelance, WebHostingTalk, and WebDesignTalk, which, frankly, they all seem kind of dead. They’re popular and have alot of traffic, but seem “dead”.

You can’t flip a blog in one day for $100… that’s just unreasonable. It’s good advice, time consuming as it might be, but you are really exaggerating the benefit when you say $1,000 a day. There’s no way in heck you could flip multiple blogs in a day for $100 each, let alone ten.

@jim:i agree with u that u cant flip blogs for 100 bucks but there are certainly some sites which you can flip for that amount. and when u get proper knowledge about flipping 1000$/day is not a big deal if you have the time or an outsourcing team.

Good post, I know you’ve shared tips like this before…and I know people do it all the time. Doing that many per day is doable if one wants to devote the time.
I, like you, would rather not spend my entire day creating websites to flip lol, but, once again you share some great money making methods.

Yes Jason, to go along with the question Ralph had, what are your regular forums for selling sites? I know BP doesn’t do all that much site selling, their you are really part of the community and know almost everyone. But where do you go where people like to buy sites? Does DP work for that?

I’ve started building multiple websites now, but Holy crap! I can’t part with them. LOL !
I keep getting brainstorms on how to promote them more, and put in better content, hook up with the just right affiliates, etc.
Anyway, most of them are just getting started and they are just starting to get some juice. I’m going to keep playing with them until they get some real good ranking, which they will, then I’ll consider selling. Or not… \grin/
Great ideas though Jason. Thanks.

My real question is where are you getting the content? Are you writing the content yourself? Sounds like a great plan for content writers, but for the majority of us, we would need to pay to get it or it would take MUCH longer to create ourselves.
Any chance you would be willing to show us a site you have already sold?

@ Trent – I am wondering that myself, but I think Jason writes articles within minutes, and the good ones take half an hour or so. You have to work up to be fast and skillful, and you have to persevere writing. So that you can brag on how fast you flipped a site, I would advise writing a few articles ahead of time.

mm, this sounds more like theory/example than a solid means to make money
The idea is great, but the execution will break your spines. And aftr a week of doing this, you will see that a dayjob is better than this!!!
But then, you can outsource the work and have fun with this.

All those people saying it cannot be done have obviously never tried this before. It IS possible to sell a fresh website for $100, and even multiple ones for $100 a day. $1,000 a day is a long shot without contacts (which I’ll talk about today) but $100 – $200 a day is definitely not that difficult if you put in the work.
Stop whining about how difficult things are and try it out. You’ll be surprised
Re: the articles; you can either outsource them (ten articles x 250 words will cost you $20 – $25) or if you’re starting out you can write them yourself. If I’m focused, I can whip together a decent article within five minutes, I’m talking about a 400 word article that makes sense in a niche I know about.
Again, flipping fresh websites online is not a sustainable long term business model but to get started… there’s little better.

I think this is a very workable idea, I’m must too lazy to do it!
I guess the real key would be to outsource, but I don’t really have the contacts to even get started, and I usually don’t trust the low end freelancers that are commonly found on forums.

You can`t do all these things in one day, even if you were working all 24 hours. Only registering 10 coms, buying all 100 articles , listing them up on Sitepoint.com , would cost you around 4 – 6 hours, and around 350 – 450 $. I don`t agree at all here jason.

Excellent post! I’m just starting out in community management/marketing media and trying to learn how to do it well – resources like this article are incredibly helpful. As our organization is based in the US, it?s all a little bit new to us. The example above is something that I be concerned about as well, how to show your personal genuine enthusiasm and write about the truth that your item is useful in that situation.
