Seriously, it does.

A lot of spammers have been targeting TUK over the last couple of weeks… whereas before, I used to get maximum of ten spammy comments a day, nowadays I’m lucky if I get less than twenty spam comments an hour. A lot of them relating to various male and female body size deficiencies.

How much spam do you get daily on your Wordpress blog?

Another place I get a truckload of spam is through email… again, before I used to get one spam email daily, nowadays it’s more like thirty daily. Luckily due to Akismet and Gmail’s sweet spam filter, none of them get through apart from the odd “YOU JUST WON $1,000,000 IN THE LOTTERY” emails. Oh, and the ones saying that a certain Nigerian king just died and his wife will send me a few hundred million dollars if I help them move the funds :)

Making Money With Spam

No, fool – I don’t mean spamming people.

If you get a lot of spam comments, take a look at the anchor text they use – they’re often specially chosen for a reason. Very rarely will you find one word anchor text used for spam comments; it’ll often be a few keywords, that is long tail ones.

Next time you check your Akismet filter, take a look at all the anchor text used, and paste them into a Notepad file. You should get around 20 – 30 variations.

What you do next is take those keywords, and try them out in SEOBook’s keyword tool. Using this, I’ve found keywords searched for upwards of 3,000 times monthly (100 daily) with less than a few thousand Google search results. Ripe for picking? You betcha.

Of course, before you start building a niche website for your phrase, make sure you run it (or a variation of it, at least) through Spyfu to check what people are paying. Even if you get a low $ number, or nothing at all, you might want to look into it – a lot of search engine traffic to a well optimized page generally leads to decent profits.

Just one of the things I stumbled across while I was a little bored – will it make money? No idea. We’ll see, and I’ll update here if it does. However, I’ve always wanted to find some highly searched keywords with little to no competition (especially when the bulk of the websites you are competing with are splogs – easy to outrank) and build niche websites targeting them, so this is a way to start. Make sure you check out your keywords to see if you find anything – this doesn’t work for the email spam you get, but you’ll find a few gems in your Wordpress spam. Don’t target the same ones I am

If anyone of you want to take this further and have success with it, the domain MAKEMONEYWITHSPAM.COM is available… the potential is there for a website (and a TV show – would beat the Apprentice, at least). Now make sure you register it before I do ;)

Anyways, I’m going to stop mentioning spam in this post because if I talk too much about spam I’ll get spammy comments from spam blogs. Oops! Enjoy the short read. :)

Jason- I blogged about this topic as well! People called me nuts, but you can learn some interesting things from the spam that gets through to you. I hope you don’t mind some blatant advertising… or should it be spamvertising??? :-)

Nice job thinking outside the box. Most people just get annoyed by spam and have probably never thought of monetizing it this way. Good ideas and great links!

haha, this article had me cracking up in the beginning, because I was thinking ” Man, I get lots of spam like this!” The kind of spam where a long lost rich relative is offering you lots of money especially cracks me up :P whats awful though is that some people do fall for them :( . But this is also great advice, and very creative.

    Jason,

This post was awesome. I have never taken a class in anything related to online marketing. I watch what everyone else (yes, including spammers do), and then I try to understand it, replicate it, and improve upon it.
