One of the things that irritate website owners most is spam… heck, I get 5-10 comments daily related to Viagara, Credit Cards, Forex and all sorts of things… these kinds of comments are luckily immediately caught by the spam filter (Akismet) and saves me the hassle of dealing with them. Spam got so bad on the forum I set up that I had to close it, for now at least – I’m going away on holiday, and don’t want to come back with like a thousand posts that I have to delete.
I go through my Akismet once a week, in order to approve some comments listed as spam when they aren’t really – I found a pretty decent (so I thought) comment from a Matt Hanson, talking about how he liked the blog and subscribed to the feed – wondering why it was listed there, I of course removed it and made it live. Not thinking much of it, I went about my daily breeze through the regular blogs – and realized why he was marked as spam by someone who had caught on.
The guy had leave the exact same comment on various blogs in the niche – some of those included Winning the Web, Tyler Cruz and Serial Monetizer… I noticed him on many, many more blogs. Heck, if you take a look at Google search, it brings up 64 results for that string only by Matt Hanson – spam, spam, spam, spam! If you do a Google search without the name, it brings up a massive 11,500 results – looks like spammers are getting a lot smarter.
The above is what a post from my good ole spammer friend looks like. I’m not going to link to his blog, as it looks like a load of crap to be honest be be forewarned – if he leaves a friendly looking comment like that on your blog, delete it as it’s spam.
The readers have spoken… and out of those that have, I liked my good buddy Hamza’s suggestion best. I will only be inserting the email subscription form sporadically in my posts, but it will be added in just before something important happens.
What’s the important thing, you ask? Well, tomorrow and something within the next week, I am going to walk you through two methods to make money online. Things that anyone can do – the first one (which I’ll discuss tomorrow) requires no investment at all so you might as well give it a go – I know of people making hundreds a week with it. It’s an interesting concept that I will be putting into play over the next few days – you can have a go with me
If you haven’t subscribed by email, make sure you do so using the above form. You could subscribe by RSS too – it’s all up to you. Also, by subscribing to RSS you’ll get a free copy of my $17 valued eBook being sold at Wealthy eBook… I’ll be removing that offer tomorrow, so make sure you get in quick if you have any interest.
It is late here, and I have a lot of work for uni – remember to stay tuned for tomorrow’s post, which will be nice and early

Yeah, I’ve been noticing those cleverly disguised spam comments lately. Generally, unless it has something to do with the post they commented on, it stays in the Akisment queue.

Worry or not about spammers, they are here. So leave them to do their job, and you do yours. Make great posts.

Hehe, When I saw the image of the comment I realized that he had actually spammed me as well. I manually approved it since it looked decent. Marked it as spam now though! Thanks for the post.

Lucky you Jason. I’ve been getting the crappiest spammers in the business who post gibberish with nothing making sense to me except the word Viagara.
Luckily, me with http://www.thegadgetreviews.com it’s easy to notice the freakish comments. I pity some guys with mixed content

I had the EXACT same thing in my Akismet, but I didn’t approve it because the comment above it was the exact same thing except instead of “Google Reader” it was “rss email subscription” or something like that.

I hate spammers. I used to have a forum, and would get people spamming frequently. I’m glad I had moderators though since they are the ones who deleted the comments…saved me time.
I will take a peek at your method for making money tomorrow if I wake up early enough.

Ha ha smart way of spamming
Some spammers write good comments for 1st time approval and if lucky and their comment got approved, then they can spam easily and their spam comments are displayed without being sent to the spam box or moderation box.

Seems they are getting smarter, although, I don’t have problems with them as my sites just ain’t popular enough lol!
On another note, arrived in Dubai today, weather is pretty good, but man, it is one hell of a building site!

The emails your getting Jason are nothing.Daily I receive about 500 spam emails and around half of them are related to Viagra, condoms and other shit.
About the spamming I read somewhere that some of the biggest spammers on the Internet were captured and send to jail. They have earned thousands of dollars from this spamming business but in the end they screwed up and went to the big house

Well I’ve had more and more spam escaping my anti-spam these days too !
But I think it is just a matter of time before the antispam catch up with the new types of spam, and then, spammers will find another way
Talk about a vicious circle

A good Captcha can eliminate much of the spam. I used to get hundreds of spam registrations and posts a day on my forums until I installed the captcha, now I get none.

I’ve been noticing those too, and that one you got is really tricky. It gives the good, honest commentators a bad name! However, the ones I get most often are the really long ones with about a hundred different phrases of ‘Paris Hilton p0rn’. *sigh*
