2008
Yesterday I posted about how Michael Dunlop (advertiser here and MSN buddy) over at Retire@21 had posted an interesting list of the top young bloggers under twenty one… I found myself sneaking in at number five, however was surprised to say the least about not just some of the rankings in the list, but some of the inclusions as well.
By the title of this post, I meant to say that I think that list sucked. No offense to Michael, but I like to speak my mind, and it doesn’t seem like there was any metrics used to compile that list together – just a jumbled mismatch of people under twenty one. I will concede that the list was a phenomenal idea, if done correctly – something like Mark’s list of the Top 100 at 45n5 for younger bloggers would be a unique feature on the web, and although the idea was good, the plan was not executed very well.
Seeing that, I threw together a quick list of my own – mainly based on RSS subscribers, although if they were similar I looked at influence in the community they targeted and interaction on the blog. I’ll be honest – I hadn’t heard of some of these young bloggers before but I guess that’s because they operate in different markets; most of the MMO/blogging tips crowd I read regularly, and it was a pleasant surprise to see those in other areas doing well. No ages shown below, although they are all U21
1) Paul Bourque (UberAffiliate)
2) Thilak Raj Rao (Tech-Buzz)
3) Glenn Wolsey (Glenn Wolsey)
4) Carl Ocab (Carl Ocab)
5) Eli Burford (Photoshop Star)
6) Mike Huang (Bloggin Ads)
7) Colin LaHay (Mixed Market Arts)
8 ) Jason Pereira (The University Kid)
9) Ahson Rafiq (Blueverse)
10) David Wilkinson (Techzi)
11) Hafiz Dhanani (Askablogger)
12) Sly Blanco (Slyvisions)
13) Michael Dunlop (Retire @ 21)
14) Jon Wheatley (J0n)
15) Josh Buckley (Josh Buckley)
16) Thomas Sinfield (Thomas Sinfield)
17) Nick Sullivan (Internet Babel)
18) Juggler (TW3O)
19) Wayne Liew (Wayne Liew)
20) Connor Wilson (Connor Wilson)
EDIT – No 21 threw a fit.
Hopefully this puts a more understandable order on the standard of bloggers, however there is of course room for improvement. I capped this at 21 simply because I couldn’t find ten more bloggers under 21 that were going along half decent – there were people on the list over at R@21 with 4 subscribers – seriously, WTF. Not to be elitist, as I myself once had less than 4 subscribers, but although one certainly can be producing good content with four RSS subscribers, there is no way in hell you should make a list of the TOP bloggers under 21 with such a number – a vital part of blogging is marketing, and obviously with only 4 people that have bothered to subscribe to your content, you can’t be doing that very well.
Why my list sucks
Although it ordered mainly by RSS subscribers, it did not seriously take other factors into account – for example, R@21 only added in a RSS feed recently and thus has less than other blogs (although their mailing list is immense I do believe) while interaction is (t0 me) even more important that feed numbers – you see, people can subscribe only for a large contest, however the real quality of a medium-to-small blog is measured by the amount of comments received – only if one is producing stimulating or interesting posts will they engage visitors into commenters. TUK for example receives quite a decent number of comments per post, certainly more than some above in both lists – didn’t want to raise myself on a too high pedestal yet
.
What’s good to see
The number of high profile, young bloggers out there. Four out of the top five had more than 2,000 RSS subscribers and the one that didn’t ranks no1 for the phrase “make money online” in Google. Not bad for a bunch of teenagers, eh
Most of the people on the above list have professionally looking websites and they are (hopefully) well set for what will be many years ahead.
I was however disappointed that I could only find 21 bloggers – I’m sure there are more, of high quality too however I have not come across them – it is likely that a few are blogging in other languages and other fields, ones that I have simply not seen during my time online.
I’ve not created this list looking for exposure – just to reply to a list that I felt was grossly inaccurate; anyways feel free to let me know what you think, whether you agree or disagree or just think young bloggers aren’t that cool.

I agree entirely, although you should probably be in that revised list Jason
You write some seriously good stuff

Nice list.

congrats to the list…
I agree, though not that you didn’t list me. I thought that compared to a lot of those sites, even a smaller blog like mine was too good for them. There were several personal blogs with like 3 readers… I was kind of turned off by that aspect of it.

Nice! That is a lot of RSS feed subscribers when you look at that entire list…

Damn, my blog could be on that list.
Just kidding, my blog is too young yet. By the way it’s interesting that I don’t know about half of the blogs on the toplist.

Amen Jason. I ranked #12 originally when blogs that ranked above mine were half as established. This list looks a lot more accurate with Paul at the top.
Stumbled!
Collin LaHay’s last blog post..Build powerful links with a PR7 blog
Interesting. How come you did not decide to follow Mark @ 45n5’s lead and list the stats from subscribe count, alex, and technorati. That way you would get the metrics you say we lack, and we would get more detailed information and justification for the rankings.
As for not finding many, well I would imagine they do better by hiding their age. A lot of people are skeptical about taking advice from someone so young, so by hiding their age they can come across as more credible. Personally I like to know more about people, hence I always read about pages.
Tom Beaton’s last blog post..Do not make yours just another newsletter
Wow.. Cool to meet young bloggers like me. I hope I’ll be also listed here sometime.

Congratulations to all of you on the list. I hope someone will do a similar list for people in their 30s
so I can end up on it.

Seriously, I don’t think that list makes any sense or any use. Once we entered this field, there should be no longer a room for kids under 21 to whine for attention and we should learn how to survive in this world filled with big boys.
No one subscribes to you or visit your blog just because you are a kid under 21. Agreeable?

@ Jim, I took RSS feed count over quality. Did not include quality in the list at all, as it is merely my opinion – there are some blogs in the list above that I feel are utter crap yet have a decent feed count, whereas there are others which provide valuable content with lower numbers.
@ Jeremy, I thought that was interesting too. Different fields, I guess
@ Colin, indeed
@ Tom, I’ll tell you the truth – there were two reasons. A) was that I have no idea how to compile all the statistics in one place, and B) is that even if I did, I’d be too lazy to do it
Re the age part, I do agree a lot of people do that these days… I’d be embarrassed if I was one of those guys, because it is your content that should speak for itself, not when you were born – people that hold age too seriously would likely be unimportant readers anyways.
@ Andreas, there’s plenty of room for someone to start one – *hint*
@ Wayne, I’ve met plenty of people that have subscribed here because they feel awe that someone who’s not yet old enough to drive can produce such quality. Their words, not mind. I do agree that it should not be a factor, however unfortunately it is
It doesnt matter how many RSS subscribers you have. You should consider other factors also
The number of RSS subscribers is obviously important and its nice to see the list recalculated using that measurement. Nice re-work of the list!
egk’s last blog post..Under the Hood :: RE: 1994 E320 – Turn signals, hazards, and rear defrost
Dude can u please remove me from the list and add some of those above? I kinda feel shame being last from 21 even I have 130+ subscribers in less than 1 month blogging and I don’t believe that john chow had more he’s first month! So please do that!
Mark
@ Trevomanut, see the being too lazy comment above
@ EGK, cheers
@ Mark, sorry you had to throw a tantrum… but to be honest, the blogs in the list that was reworked are a lot, lot better that yours. Did you honestly think that you were the ninth best blogger U21 in the WORLD? I don’t even believe the ranking I gave myself of 8th is true, as there are people with far more readers and traffic, just undiscovered… perhaps the 8 with a zero would be more appropriate.
Anyways, have followed your wishes and deleted ya from the list.
yeah, that list seems to be totally random. i made more realistic list here

I think you chose the right route by using RSS subscriptions. It isn’t fair to people who just switched over to say, Feedburner, but is way better than useless PageRank or easy-to-rig Alexa Rankings.

@ Mademind, your Adsense blocks the title. Where’s the link love?
@ Jacob, damn, knew I missed (a lot of) people. By RSS count, I believe you’d go in fifth place
@ Mike, the best way would be to have a measure of all three… I didn’t have the time to that but others did looks like.
Jason, thanks for including me in that list.

Ok then, how long are you blogging here?
mark’s last blog post..List Of The 30 Youngest Bloggers In the World… I rank #9
4 – 5 months. But do you really think that time spent factors into it? Because I don’t. Just because you, I or anyone in particular has been blogging months (or years even) less than those at the top of the list, that doesn’t make us any better
Hey University Kid,
thanks for including me in the list, I’m still unsure how I made the original list (or #5 on this one!)
Reading through the comments, I hope you don’t think of my site (PhotoshopStar) as being one of the utter crap blogs that has a large subscriber base. The feedcount has recently been growing quite rapidly (over 500 within the last few months) which is quite cool, gives me a bit of a confidence boost too.
Someone should come up with some sort of algorithm for ranking these bloggers on a list, you put in someone’s name, website and birthdate, then it automatically gets the website’s Alexa, Technorati and subscriber count.
Thanks again, best of luck with everything, and I think I’ll be subscribing to TUK.
I don’t think that RSS counts should be the sole factor, but it should weight heavily.
well i think that young bloggers are awesome, but being a young blogger myself (13 years of age and not a very good blogger at that) i’d say that anyone’s blog can be awesome it just mabey doesn’t appeal to you as much as it might to someone else!
