I just ran across this blog post and I feel really compelled to respond due to the fact that I've been building lists for the past 4 years. I hear from my coaching clients all the time that quite a number of affiliate marketers are telling them to not waste anytime building an email list.

In my honest opinion, that is a dumb move. Why?

Well, an email list is an asset that you can control. Just building an email list of targeted subscribers gives you the power to leverage that list anytime you want to because you own it. If I need to make some quick cash, or send traffic to a particular offer, then I can just write a quick email....and shoot it out to my list. It's just that simple.

But those who are solely depending on Google Adwords and PPC traffic to make them money are just creating money makers, they are not building a sustainable business. If google adwords and all the ppc networks suddenly stopped, what traffic source will you be able to pull from in order to keep your business afloat.

If Google, Yahoo, and MSN filed bankruptcy and had to end their operation, then what will happen with your business then? If your whole entire biz model was based on buying traffic, and not capturing it in the form of email leads, then you may need to make a career change if Google, Yahoo, and MSN suddenly closed shop.

Any business you build should be creating assets that will not make it dependable on other mechanisms. Building an email list is one of the only ways you can guarantee yourself a stable business.

Sorry for the rant and rambling.

I don't think that subscribers have anything to do with how much you make unless you're making all your money from paid reviews. A site might have tons of traffic and no subscribers at all.

Just saying...

$1-3 per subscriber per month seems high to me. $0.5 would already be a decent number.

I agree.

Although I read his book and it was pretty interesting, I still would like to punch Robert Allen right in the face (and prolly give a good bitch slap to Don Lapre as well- just for good measure)

For a while I was unsure about list building. I was a MLMer with a fairly large downline. Once I started learning about the power of having a list, my income grew. I built trust with those in my downline, so when I started researching and joining other companies, they followed me.
It is extremely necessary to build a list in what ever niche you are in to make more money. Great post!

Great post! Building a list is absolutely essential. I'm trying to build a list on my blog right now and it's definitely a challenge. I think the major key is your content. If you can deliver something to your readers that they want to read, and then take that a step further and deliver something so good that they want to tell their friends to read it, then you're in good shape!

[...] The value of having a list : In this post on TUK, Ryan talks about the value of building a list and I wholeheartedly agree. I’ve been putting efforts into this, and you can see the results coming in. The RSS subscribers of this blog are around 300, and I’m working hard to cross 1000 by the end of this month. With a targeted list and a great relationship with your subscribers, something you build over time, you can make very good money online. [...]
