The biggest blogs tend to be updated often: most update at least once a day, while some tend to update even more so.
I recommend updating daily, or sticking to a pattern of frequent, scheduled updates as that is what will bring people back to your website. For example, people visit TUK at least once a day because they know that I usually post daily. Post too erratically and you’ll lose your readers – hardly rocket science, is it?
The problem with blogging is that people often get worn out and bereft of ideas, especially people that aren’t too creative. When you’re setting a goal to update once daily, you need to produce a different idea every single day – that’s 365 ideas a year, something that can get extremely difficult when you factor in the amount of blogs talking about similar topics as yourself.
Even if you wipe out say sixty five days for the odd fluff post, contests, news, missed days and whatnot, you’ve still got three hundred or so posts to write. How do you concentrate on continually writing stuff that will increase your readership rather than sending them away?
Run a “Series Of”
I’ve not done this yet, but will be doing so as soon as I think of a topic – anyways, find a topic that your readers enjoy seeing you blog about and write up a series on it.
You can find out what topics your readers prefer by seeing the average amount of comments on each post – of course, you could be outright and just run a poll or similar asking them for their opinions.
By running a series of posts on the same topic, you have to think less and thus your content should be better – make sure you talk about something you enjoy, and you’ll be fine.
For example, this post itself – I could take each point, expand on it and run it as a “Series Of Producing Killer Blog Content”. Doesn’t sound too difficult now, does it?
Call In The Guest Posters
If you don’t have any ideas, get someone else to come up with them. Or to be evil smart, ask someone if they’d be interested in getting some exposure and let them know you’re open for a guest post on your blog next week.
Although people mainly read blogs to see the thoughts of the owner, those thoughts can get boring and stale, most people cope with this by reading many blogs a day, but why give them that option? Make them stay on your website by getting in someone with fresh views, and it’s even better if those fresh views differ from your own.
Some people warn against getting in guest posters whose views are too difficult than the blog owner – I disagree with that entirely. For whatever reason, people read this blog – some like the way I write, some want to find out what I’m doing, some people think I’m an idiot and come here to get their daily laughs
- it’s always good to shake things up.
I’ve always said on here that controversy is king, and what better way to drive controversy than getting a guest poster to talk about an extremely controversial (controversial in the world of blogging, mind you) topic on your blog. If people agree, great; if people don’t agree and want to rail against the person who wrote it for being an idiot well – that works well too.
Even if you have just one guest poster a week, that is fifty two less post ideas that you have to come up with – so start looking now.
Use Media To Get People Visiting And Staying On Your Blog
Sometimes, especially during times you’re feeling too lazy to write a post or just can’t come up with ideas – you can use media to not just provide your readers with someone different, but maybe even better your blog’s statistics.
The average repeat reader that comes to TUK gets onto the front page, maybe reads the first post – maybe even comments. How much time does that take – a couple minutes maximum?
Post something that you do not normally – for example, a video or a game. A simple search on Youtube for something like “funny blogging” should give you quite a few results, and most people will watch the full thing assuming its half decent.
A game is even better – you could hold a mini-contest and reward one that can screenshot the highest score a prize; this will lead to people staying on your blog for quite a while, especially if you choose an addictive game.
These are three ways you could use to engage your readers and give them something different: do you have any things you do to make sure that your readers don’t get bored?

Thanks for the tips. I feel I have not been able to produce much of content for my visitors. Though I will try my best for it.
Agent 001’s last blog post..Improving Your Alexa Score
I find running a series of post is a very nice way to organize a series of posts. It’s also nice because you can always add stuff to the next post so you won’t have to worry about forgetting to add something in. I also find it is nice to read as well
.
Rob’s last blog post..Testing and Comparing your Efforts
Aaack… eventhough I love to write, and do so every chance I get, I do admit that it’s tough coming up with blog posting ideas every day… I like your suggestions, and will certainly try them out!
Mo’s last blog post..Static Sites Are Dead – GET A BLOG!
Yes, power of media is huge, but you cannot rely on it too long. Fresh posts are what readers want.
Aleks’s last blog post..Funny picture – Hair
You are absolutely right on this one. Will try out some of what you said but I think it would not be easy.
NDS Games’s last blog post..By: Joe Cole
Thanks for the ideas Jason.. badly needed as I do not get to post daily. Geez. Working on that now.. lol.
I am still looking for people to write but I havent found any. damn!
@ Agent, good luck implementing them
@ Rob, I’ve heard that people like them. I need to get a series of posts together sometime, just let me think up a topic…
@ Mo, let me know how it goes on BP.
@ Aleks, true dat. Just a couple ideas for people with none of their own
@ ChiQ, aye have noticed your posting frequency dropped. Get cracking.
@ NDS, it’s a shame to hear that.
I really like the idea of the game, and I remember seeing on BP that will keep readers stuck to their computers for hours
I think you have a typo or I am confused. In the second point you say “…are too difficult than the blog owner ” – I assume you mean “…are to different than the blog owner.” Or perhaps you mean confrontational.
You make great points and I appreciate it. Just wanted clarification on your second point.
Hey Mike,
Too different. Sorry, I typed that up late.
These are some good ideas. A lot of people do the series one, take Big Ben Patton for example.
Nathaniel’s last blog post..Paypal? What Type?
I have to agree completely with Jason here these are the best ways to get things stirred up and content production booming. I have personally used all three of these during times where I was very busy with other projects or just not on one of those days where I could devise a wonderfully clever post.
Big Ben Patton’s last blog post..Traffic Generation part 5
i like the third idea.i wud b giving your reader something away from the normal.will try that for sure.arent series posts boring or too lengthy?
