I do not need any more guest posts, thanks to all that have put them forward. Along with this, I have enough of them – if you’ve sent one in already, it will go up or I will reply to you with necessary changes; do not send in any more please. I will hopefully be back soon, my Internet is still playing up and I have uni starting in 3-4 days, so just making sure everything’s good.

To get a website onto the Internet you need hosting, this is really space on a server where your domain points to. When you are looking to purchase hosting there are things that you need to look for to make sure you are going to be satisfied and not ripped off.
Firstly you need to see what their support is like. You need to get good support from your host because if something goes wrong you need to be able to speak to them and get your website up quickly so you don’t lose traffic and potential earnings.
Secondly you want to find out what current clients think about the host. Are they happy with the host? if not why aren’t they happy, what’s the problem with the host. You can do this by searching the host’s name on Google or by posting a message on Webmaster Forums. There is no point purchasing from a host where their current clients aren’t happy.
Thirdly you need to look what the site’s up time is. They can offer you all the space and bandwidth in the world but if their server is down most of the time your not going to get any visitor’s and not make any money.
Fourthly you would want to see if the host oversells. If you say for example you have purchased a hosting plan with 100gb’s of space would you have all of the space to use or would other people be using it. If the company oversells the likely chance is that when you reach half of what they have said you will get they
will suspend or terminate your account.
Lastly only purchase what you need! When you are looking for hosting only purchase what you need, if you have a small site do go buying a plan with loads of space and bandwidth. By a small plan and when you are running out of space and bandwidth you can upgrade. Doing this means that you make the most out of your money and not wasting it on stuff you don’t need.

I noticed a lot of host over sell just to get customers. I think there just too much bull crap people use to get referals or host just feeding them a line.
Do they porvide the customer service that I require if I have a problem? I sure hope they do because if they didn’t I would be moving on. Even places like hostgator has these problems with some customers.

So far I’ve been very happy with Hostgator … I’ve has a shared plan for a couple of years, and recently bought a reseller account. So now I get to do the challenging task of transferring all my sites from one host to another. Oh joy!

I’ve worked at Hostgator as an admin… you get good uptime and support is ok if you get the right person (always bypass the moron on livechat and ask for the shift supervisor). But it is true that if you try and use up the allotted traffic they give you, you will find your account suspended and find a message asking you to upgrade to dedicated server or move the site to another host.
That kind of sucks but that is the nature of overselling hosting.
If you are getting enough traffic, it is nothing to pop over to theplanet.com (which is where Hostgator colocated their servers anyway!) and get yourself a dedicated server. Who knows, you might learn enough about system administration to get a job at Hostgator.

These are some ok aspects, but I think there are simpler ways to narrow down what host you use. If you are going professional then you defiantly need something better than a 2 cent host that throws at you a little package like crappy run down hotels. For a siteflip, it does not matter as much.
I use dreamhost, not the nest or the worst host, but I do allright. It is a shared account, like 10 other blogs that don’t belong to me on it.

Currently I deal with HostGator and have zero complaints.
I do have another hosting company I belong to and they suck really bad. Their support people just run around in circles, the downtime is bad and they give timeouts about 50% of the time.
They way over sell.
I have tried to get the blogs there moved but even HostGator couldn’t move them and make them work so I am stuck with moving each post and redirecting to the new site.
Until I get that done I won’t say who they are but you can be sure I will make a few nasty posts about them when I am ready.

What kind of host do you need for site flipping? Are all hosts okay with transferrals of domains and sites? I heard Hostgator is good for site flipping, but has anyone tried Hostmonster?

Both HostGator and DreamHost are good for site flipping. I have used them both and never had any major problems. For site flipping, bandwidth, disk allocation and bells and whistles are not really the issue; what matters more is that the host permits a high number (or unlimited) domains per account, and (for me at least) that they offer good availability and shell access.

Good points. I’ve never personally had a problem with any web hosts, but I know plenty of people that have. Overselling is definitely a common problem, but it can be hard to know weather or not a web host is doing it.

I reckon overselling is one of the biggest problem when it comes to webhosting apart from occasional downtime. Personally, I’ll pick customer support as the most important factor when choosing a webhost. I’ll shoot them an support ticket and I’ll see how fast they will response..
