You Need To Be Arrogant To Do Well Online
Posted by Jason in Daily RamblingDecent minded people fail at life.
Naah, I’m just joking. However, to make it big, you have to have a little bit of arrogance in you.
Being arrogant, cocky even at times is one of the main reasons I’ve gotten to where I am today – admittedly, not as much as some… however, in a place that I’m fairly happy to be in.
Sadly, if you’re in online business and you lack the attitude, people are going to walk over you.
I am not joking – I experienced it at the beginning of my online ‘career’. Not knowing any better, and just wanting to make money, I undertook writing articles at $2/piece… considering each article took an hour, if not more to write, I was working at far less than minimum wage in most countries.. and I hated it.
The problem is, such companies love to take advantage of people that just don’t know any better, and are too kind to say no, even though they definitely should… a large part of that is because people don’t know any better (that they could get more elsewhere) but also because people are just too nice in general.
I’d like to ask everyone here to try and be a little more arrogant, if possible – honesty is vital, too. Now here perhaps I’m a bit too honest sometimes – if someone messages me and I think they are a jackass, I will call them a jackass. Something that has gotten me off on the wrong foot with people a few times but generally worked well.
Random stuff
The move to the dedicated server is done – I never knew how much work was involved, but anyways – Hostican responded to the many questions I had every single time, and speedily too. I will write a post about how they rock soon enough
I will be working on the blogging magazine and you should see the website go up tomorrow. No promises, as there is a lot of work behind the scenes to do. I have been pinged with a few revolutionary-ish ideas, if anyone would like to contribute/suggest something, let me know via email/IM.
I started a new blog yesterday – I’ll be honest with you, it’s one I intend to sell. Eventually, not at the moment though; anyways, I got a somewhat decent domain name and it will be a lot more casual that TUK – I promised I’d hold back a little on here as it was turning a few readers away, but as this is a brand new blog I don’t have readers to turn away – yet.
Rants, raves and just general tips will be put up on the blog, anyways you can check out MMO Kid and subscribe to the feed while you’re there
I will be offering free (100% free) hosting for blog startup-wannabes as soon as I sort this server out – bear with me. I’ve got around 3,000 GB of bandwidth free and this will be ideal for those of you that didn’t want to buy hosting for just one blog. Note, this will only be for blogs, not image hosts, proxies etc; will update as the week goes on.
I will be launching an old, old project this week that the partner I was working on it with and I completely forgot about – it’s something that (I think!) has never been done before in the blogosphere and will be a lot more beneficial than Entrecard in terms of useful traffic, albeit a bit less. Stay tuned.
Apologies for the extremely short post today, but I had a killer day at Uni… seven hours straight (I normally have 2-3, max) and a crazy amount of work. More tomorrow, I promise

Hey Jason looking forward to the blogging magazine. Congrats on your
Seriously what
new blog. But how do you handle the competition
type of audience/niche are you aiming for in that blog?
congrats on the move to the dedi server!
will be waiting for the completion of ur blogging magazine!
@chenzen, i think he is aiming for a MMO audience, people who are interested in the MMO industry..
Richy,
@ Chenzen, the fun aspect of MMO… less serious than here, and a bit of a place to rant
Suggestion, why not find a short domain, and offer WP MU (http://mu.wordpress.org) for people to start their own blogs?
Now that could really take off

Sound, solid advice and this can work in real life too, not just on the ‘net.
The issue is always balance between arrogance and manners–no need to sound like an arse just because you can, but no need to lay down and get walked over either.

Great post, however I wouldn’t call it arrogance…It’s confidence. If you’re not confident with what you’re doing, those who are doing business with you are going to pick up on it and and either try to take advantage of you by negotiating your rates with you, or simply by going with somebody else. Great post!

Arrogant works. Just take alook at walmart suing a disabled women. Arrogant
Yeah the internet is definitely a dog eat dog world and the more confidence you show the more respect you will get. If you don’t think your great who else will think you are?!
Will be checking out the MMOkid blog and looking forward to the magazine, good luck with it….

Survival. Who survive will talk. That’s the law of nature. Makes you stronger.

I’d rather you be confident with what you can offer to the internet world that is why you are charging according to the kind of service you offer and not just being “arrogant”.. that everybody else becomes a loser and you become a rockstar.
I wouldn’t call it dog eat dog, a lot of people make good friends while trying ot make money online, but it is rather competitive

that is what lots of outsourcing and IT companies are doing. They get done their work for $1 and sell them for $5.
I totally agree with this.
Ive shown arrogance with value of advertising spots on some of my sites and managed to drive the price higher. Which is good when starting out as you have more money to invest in advertising your site or whatever you want it for.
Now however as some of my sites are getting bigger i would rather ust do it at a fair price for longer terms, as i dont have to mess around finding more avertisers a month later.
My general rule is short term push the price up as it involves more work, short term reduce the price as its 1 worry off your mind then and guarenteed income for 3 or more months.

So how can we get that blog hosting?
Sounds cool
Arrogance may not be the best word…
Certainly show power. Don’t let people walk over you, but don’t be rude.
When you need to, summon up a little anger and determination and let it show on your face. Don’t have an outburst – only immature people lash out when they are angry. But use this to show that you are above them (even if you aren’t
) – the key is to intimidate is some cases.
Great stuff guys, thanks for the comments. Re the word used – perhaps arrogance was a bit off, however for me, overbelieving in your abilities – for example, I believe I can start one of the biggest projects in blogging history despite having no past record – to me, that borders on arrogance. Which I’m glad to have, as without it there is no way I’d have a chance in hell of succeeding
Your confidence isn’t arrogance, its ‘confidence’
I don’t know if arrogant is the right word, but you certainly have to be confident. Bloggers who come off as wishy-washy tend to not go very far. You gotta have some authority.

Arrogance just really comes out off. . However, Authority and Confidence should go hand in hand to become successful.
I disagree. You don’t have to be arrogant at all. Perhaps in some service fields, but aside from that, not at all.
What’s the details on the blog hosting? (not interested personally, just wondering) And what is the blogging magazine?
TBH, I actually agree lol. I think the same thing. You gotta be a little bit of a jer sometimes to be able to be successful. Being a jerk is something I need to work on hehe.
